The Primary Dimension Control is located at the top left of the Analysis Screen. It is labelled 'By understanding'.

What is a dimension?

A 'dimension' in Ipiphany is the method of classification that you are choosing to group records by. For example, if you choose a dimension of 'Country' then Ipiphany will return records grouped by the names of countries.

There are 3 main types of dimension:

  • Structured attributes

  • Unstructured attributes

  • Analyses

Structured attributes are category type attributes in your dataset (e.g. Airline, Country, Cabin Class, etc). They must be imported with your dataset. The special attribute 'Segments' is a combination of all structured attributes.

Unstructured attributes are created by Ipiphany when it processes your Verbatim Text Fields. These attributes are: Concepts, Broad Themes, Themes, Keywords, and Word Associations.

  • Concepts are categories from the 'Domain Knowledge' you selected when creating the dataset

  • Broad Themes & Themes are dynamically created categories based on "semantic theme clusters"

  • Keywords & Word Associations are simple categories based on the presence of a single word (keywords) or a combination of two words (word associations)

Analyses are lists of insights that you (or another Ipiphany user) has discovered.

How do I change dimension?

Click on Concepts to toggle to 'Concepts' or click the down arrow to display the dimension dialog window. Selecting a dimension in this way will save it to the second spot of the dimension control so you can quickly toggle between concepts and the new dimension.
